THE FOOL WHO WANTS A CAT

It wasn't very long ago,
Just about a year or so,
When I convinced my husband that
He'd hardly notice one small cat.

He made his position very clear
"She's your responsibility, dear.
This kitten's yours, remember that.
I'm not the fool who wants a cat."

"You'll be in charge of discipline,
Putting her out and letting her in."
Well I understood she'd be my cat,
But I don't think he remembers that.

She's mine to care for and to feed;
I see to her every need.
But when it's time for love and a pat,
She immediately becomes his cat.

He loves "my cat" and it's plain to see
That she loves him as much as me.
At any designated time
You'll find her in his lap not mine.

I suppose I could remind him that
He's not the fool who wants a cat.
But in fact it pleases me,
Because love is better shared by three.

WHEN GOD CREATED KITTY CATS

When God created kitty cats,
He had no recipe;
He knew He wanted something sweet,
As sweet as sweet could be.

He started out with sugar,
Adding just a trace of spice;
Then stirred in drops of morning dew,
To keep them fresh and nice.

He thought cats should be soft to pet,
Thus He gave them coats of fur;
So they could show they were content,
He taught them how to purr.

He made for them long tails to wave,
While strutting down the walk;
Then trained them in meow-ology,
So they could do cat-talk.

He made them into acrobats,
And gave them grace and poise;
Their wide-eyed curiosity,
He took from little boys.

He put whiskers on their faces,
Gave them tiny ears for caps;
Then shaped their little bodies,
To snugly fit on laps.

He gave them eyes as big as saucers,
To look into man's soul;
Then set a tolerance for mankind,
As their purpose and their goal.

Benevolent ... and ... generous,
He made so many of them;
Then charged, with Fatherly Concern,
The human race to love them.

When one jumped up upon His lap,
God gently stroked its head;
The cat gave Him a kitty kiss,
"What wondrous love," God said.

God smiled at His accomplishment,
So pleased with His creation;
And said, with pride, as He sat back,
"At last. . .I've reached purr-fection!"

KITTYCAT WEATHER

It’s kitty cat weather.
The moon is shining bright.
The evening is quite balmy.
There’s not a cloud in sight.

It’s kitty cat weather.
They’re prowling on the fence.
They’re singing ‘neath my window.
Their cries are quite intense.

It’s kitty cat weather.
The night has come alive.
There’ll be kittens in a few weeks.
Just as summer does arrive.

It’s kitty cat weather.
With golden eyes they stare.
Streaks of shadow in the darkness.
On their way to who knows where.

It comes this time of year.
As dependable as clockwork.
So my darling please don’t fear.

HOW TO GIVE YOUR CAT A PILL

1. Grasp cat firmly in your arms. Cradle its head on your elbow, just as if you were giving baby a bottle. Coo confidently, "That’s a nice kitty." Drop pill into its mouth.

2. Retrieve cat from top of lamp and pill from under sofa.

3. Follow same procedure as in 1, but hold cat’s front paws down with left hand and back paws down with elbow of right arm. Poke pill into its mouth with right forefinger.

4. Retrieve cat from under bed. Get new pill from bottle. (Resist impulse to get new cat.)

5. Again proceed as in 1, except when you have cat firmly cradled in bottle-feeding position, sit down on edge of chair, fold your torso over cat, bring your right hand over your left elbow, open cat’s mouth by lifting the upper jaw and pop the pill in - quickly. Since your head is down by your knees, you won’t be able to see what you’re doing. That’s just as well.

6. Leave cat hanging on drapes. Leave pill in your hair.

7. If you’re a woman, have a good cry. If you’re a man, have a good cry.

8. Now pull yourself together. Who’s the boss here anyway? Retrieve cat and pill. Assuming position 1, say sternly, "Who’s the boss here, anyway?" Open cat’s mouth, take pill and...Oooops!

9. This isn’t working, is it? Collapse and think. Aha! Those flashing claws are causing the chaos.

10. Crawl to linen closet. Drag back large beach towel. Spread towel on floor.

11. Retrieve cat from kitchen counter and pill from potted plant.

12. Spread cat on towel near one end with its head over long edge.

13. Flatten cat’s front and back legs over its stomach. (Resist impulse to flatten cat.)

14. Roll cat in towel. Work fast; time and tabbies wait for no man or woman.

15. Resume position 1. Rotate your left hand to cat’s head. Press its mouth at the jaw hinges like opening the petals of a snapdragon.

16. Drop pill into cat’s mouth and poke gently. Voila! It’s done.

17. Vacuum up loose fur (cat’s). Apply bandages to wounds (yours).

18. Take two aspirins and lie down.

19. Forget aspirin, drink glass of wine and lie down.

AQUARIUS PET

January 20th - February 18th

AQUARIUS: THE HIP CAT

Whether sitting in the rain or pouring cold water on an owner's ideas, the Aquarius Cat will be an unconventional sort of soul, easily bored and constantly seeking change. Watery at times and elusive at others, this feline is an exceedingly kind and honest cat...when he or she happens to be in the vicinity. Indeed, the Aquarius Cat is like no other in the Zodiac. Very independent and, at heart, a loner, this feline is infamous for being more than a little eccentric...often preferring chocolate to fish, choosing to sleep in the dog's basket, or even displaying great enjoyment in taking a bath. If permitted, the Aquarius Cat will spend hours exploring nature. Deep down inside, this cat is a tomboy...regardless of gender...and adores anything that requires running around. The Aquarius Cat also loves to climb. Physically, the male Aquarius Cat usually has a noble profile, tending to be tall for a cat and pale ginger in color. However, regardless of gender, this cat is prone to poor circulation and cold extremeties, which could prove to be a problem for everyone in the Winter when he or she attempts to snuggle up under the comforter at night. This circulatory condition can also lead to varicose veins which, if not caught in time, could develop into a major ailment. Plenty of exercise is needed by the Aquarius Cat, being the best natural answer to this feline's health troubles.

In general, the Aquarius Cat is reliable, good-natured and intelligent enough to recognize the advantages of sharing life with humans. He or she will be around much of the time...watching but unseen. The tendency to be aloof is a quality often associated with the Sign of Aquarius, but there will be occasions when this feline becomes worried that the owner may not continue to provide if he or she does not appear more dependent upon human generosity and any owner should make the most of it when the Aquarius Cat comes down to play and amuse...these will be rare occurrances and practically the only quality time an owner will ever have with this feline. Contact with humans (albeit from a distance) is more important to an Aquarius Cat than the time spent with other felines and his or her best friends are likely to be birds. This cat will attract people with an incredibly strange allure until he or she has a battery of acquaintances of all shapes and sizes, from all walks of life. The Aquarius Cat needs a large extended family in order to satisfy social needs, but an owner should be prepared for this feline to organize gatherings. Luckily, there are peaceful times since the Aquarius Cat does enjoy paying visits to others in their own surroundings...just as much as he or she delights in running an open house.

Blessed with the ability to get along with almost everyone, the Aquarius Cat truly comes into his or her own with a Libra native. This combination is the closest thing to a perfect human/cat relationship, the pairing being completely content together. Gemini subjects may also develop an intelligent relationship with the Aquarius Cat, based on reason and mutual understanding. Like all those governed by the Sign of Aquarius (regardless of species), this feline is drawn to performing for the masses and the cat on television who is happily munching on a bowl of Meow Mix is, more likely than not, a native of Aquarius. This cat rarely displays emotions and is not inclined to sulk or complain unless truly bothered by something.

Capricorn: THE CAT BURGULAR

The Capricorn Cat is a serious and shy creature, rarely taking time out for fun. In addition, this feline is probably one of the most selfish Zodiac. A prudent soul from the start, the Capricorn Cat will work calmly and deliberately toward the achievement of his or her life's ambition. This feline will plod through life in a punctillious way, head turned to the skies, falling over his or her own paws. This cat is constantly working out ways to improve his or her lot, and devising schemes to eliminate the owner's shortcomings. The Capricorn Cat harbors a great desire to climb ever-higher up the ladder of social success but will never be the "life and soul of the party" type. Physically, the Capricorn Cat is difficult to recognize by appearance alone. Ugly knees are really the only obvious characteristic attributable to this feline. The fur is usually sleek and lank and the expression slightly despondent. Indeed, this feline is very much an ordinary sort of cat, unlikely to draw any laudible gasps of admiration as he or she waddles across the floor. Possessed of a strong maternal/paternal instinct, the Capricorn Cat will view all the world's inhabitants as his or her "children." This feline often enjoys doing things that are out of the ordinary, such as sleeping in the bathtub on hot days or drinking water directly from the faucet. The Capricorn Cat is frequently frightened by things that do not normally bother other cats...shadows on the wall, the dark or high places, for example. In fact, it is likely that this feline feels most secure when sleeping under the bed or tucked behind shoes in a closet.

The Capricorn Cat prefers city life to country living. This feline is ideally suited for the position of Chief Mouser at the Town Hall, where hours could be whiled away playing with red tape. In the beginning, the Capricorn kitten appears to be fitting-in quickly. He or she will be house-trained almost overnight and may only once make the mistake of jumping onto the kitchen table. Later, however, it will become apparent that this feline has trained the family to live his or her own way...doing what he or she wants to do, when he or she wants to do it. Many stray cats seem to be governed by the Sign of Capricorn and such kittens are often abandoned when they are very young...luckily, they appear to adapt quite well to a life in the wild. Personal interaction is important to the Capricorn Cat. This feline's instinctive understanding of human frailty means that he or she will be more than generous in overlooking an owner's shortcomings...perceiving them as trials that this feline is obliged to bear in order to help him or her along the road to success. Constantly hopeful of improving the personal standard of living, however, there is always a strong chance that this cat will move out of his or her present home in order to assume residence in a more affluent household.

Natives of Virgo tend to be the most responsive to the Capricorn Cat. Virgo subjects are generous enough to accept this feline's teachings, as well as being down-to-earth enough to realize when the Capricorn Cat is rising above his or her station. Natives of Libra and Taurus may also find harmony with the Capricorn Cat, but this feline is liable to drive any Sagittarius native to total distraction.

THINGS CATS MUST REMEMBER

*Screaming at the can of food will not make it open itself.
*I should not assume the patio door is open when I race outside to chase leaves.
*If I put a live mouse in my food bowl, I should not expect it to stay there until I get hungry.
*The guinea pig likes to sleep once in a while. I will not watch him constantly.
*If I bite the cactus, it will bite back.
*I will not stand on the bathroom counter, stare down the hall, and growl at nothing right after my human has finished watching "The X-Files".
*Television and computer screens do not exist to backlight my lovely tail.
*No matter how dangly and attractive they are, my human's earrings are not cat toys.
*If I play 'dead cat on the stairs' while people are trying to bring in groceries or laundry, one of these days it will really come true.
*My human is capable of cooking bacon and eggs without my help.
*The canned cat food is already dead. I do not need to kill it by swatting bits of it all over the floor.
*I am a carnivore. Potted plants are not meat.
*I will never be able to walk on the ceiling, and staring up the wall and screaming at it will not bring it any closer.
*It is not a good idea to try to lap up the powdered creamer before it all dissolves in the boiling coffee.
*The goldfish likes living in water and must be allowed to remain in its bowl.
*If my human wants to share her sandwich with me, she will give me a piece. She will notice if I start eating it from the other end.
*I cannot leap through closed windows to catch birds outside.
*The large dog in the back yard has lived there for six years.
I will not freak out every time I see it.
*I am a neutered cat, not a peacock, and prancing around with my tail fluffed up will not make my balls grow back.
*If I must give a present to my humans's overnight guests, my toy mouse is much more socially acceptable than a live mouse, even if it isn't as tasty.
*Just because I hear voices in my head, I do not have to answer them!

These humans are kind:
They’ve brought in a tree.
I know they can’t climb,
So it must be for me !

It stands in a pot,
Of earth mixed with clay.
Yet when I start digging,
They chase me away !

They’ve hung shiny streamers,
From each prickly branch.
They’ll make a fine plaything,
When I get the chance !

They’re wrapping their presents,
The paper is nice.
The contents are strange though,
No birds ,fish or mice !

I played with the streamers
And a round shiny ball;
Then to my horror,
The tree starts to fall !

The humans are angry.
They put me outside.
What to do next,
I can’t yet decide.

Something is cooking,
What a wonderful smell !
But will they share it ?
You never can tell.

I jump on the counter,
And sniff at the plate.
The humans then move it
Alas I’m too late !

I’m tired of Christmas,
It’s no fun I say.
They have all these things
But they won’t let me play !

Christmas morning is here.
O, what a great time !
I’ve a new catnip mouse
And the turkey’s divine !

A KITTEN'S CHRISTMAS

CHRISTMAS WITH THE NEWCOMER

'Twas the night after Christmas, the time to replay
The events of that most hectic annual day.
The stockings, once hung by the chimney with care,
Were chewed on and drooled on and torn past repair.
No one was nestled all snug in his bed;
There was spilt milk and Friskies to clean up instead.
And me in my 'kerchief, and Dad in his cap,
Wished we'd settled down for a much-needed nap,
When somewhere downstairs there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from my chores to see what was the matter.
Away down the steps I flew like a flash,
Just as I heard one more thunderous crash.

The moon wasn't out, so I switched on the light,
Still hoping to see everything was all right,
When, what for my wondering eyes was in store,
But my family-room curtains a-heap on the floor.
I re-hung the drapes, but to end all this "fun,"
I knew in a moment more work must be done.
More rapid than eagles I rushed all around,
To make certain everything was safe and sound.
Out, tinsel! Out, ribbons! Out bright-colored bow!
Out, garland! Out, ivy! Out, all mistletoe!
From the poinsettia plant, to the yarn in the hall,
It's throw away! Throw away! Throw away all!

Next I turned my attention to the Christmas tree,
Making sure it was totally temptation-free.
I moved ornaments up, for 3 feet or so,
And no strand of lights was left dangling low.
When then, in a twinkling, I heard soft and sweet,
The prancing and pawing of four little feet.
As I drew in my head, and was turning around,
By the chimney this character came with a bound.
He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot,
And was covered all over with ashes and soot;
The ears stood straight up on this bold little elf,
And he looked overwhelmingly pleased with himself.

His eyes - how they twinkled! He purred like a glutton!
His tongue, pink and raspy; his nose, like a button!
His droll little tail was drawn up like a bow,
And those whiskers of his looked like yesterday's snow.
I had not a doubt that this bundle of gray
Was the cause of the chaos at our house today.
How proudly he strolled, with what grace and what style,
As he tracked soot and ashes all over the tile.
He was chubby and plump and out to impress,
And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of the mess.
I scooped up the imp, and I patted his head,
But he seemed to sense he had something to dread;

I spoke not a word, but went straight for the sink,
Where I washed him and dried him, as quick as a wink.
Then he darted away and stopped on a stair,
And giving a nod, he fell sound asleep there.
He dreamt and he kneaded and purred; all the while
I regarded him with half-frown and half-smile.
And you'd hear me exclaim, as I cleaned up our flat,
"I'll remember the Christmas that we got a cat."

MY KITTEN WON'T STOP TALKING!!

CATS

There was a spry woman

who lived next door.

She had cats in the attic

and cats on the floor.

There were cats where she ate

and cats where she slept,

And she dearly loved all

the cats that she kept.

At night she tucked each

in a wee little bed,

But they all much preferred

to wander instead.

The ripped through the screens

and battered through holes.

They climbed up the chimney

and slid down clothes poles.

They made a great racket

and scurried around.

They jumped from the roof

to the fence to the ground.

When the night was over,

at the crack of dawn,

The cats came home

with a sigh and a yawn.

They were quiet and docile

and gentle as silk

And came a-begging

for morning milk.

The neighbors were furious,

frustrated, and frantic,

Refusing to stand for

another cat antic.

When they came to complain,

they were offered a treat.

The cats were all kittenish,

playful, and neat.

They blinked and stretched

and purred on their mats.

I'M STARVING

Oh, human, who is sitting by the keys,

No, pats and stroking never will appease

my empty belly, did you think I lied?

You say you fed me just an hour ago;

you say that food's still sitting in my dish;

but that food's not the sort I want, and so

it doesn't suit my needs, answer my wish.

You say you love me, but you still sit there;

you just ignore my plaintive, whining mews;

we exchange headbutts, but it isn't fair;

I'll wait right here till I get food news.

The mouse pads mine; mouse lies beneath my butt;

I'll keep it till you fill my hollow gut.

MIND READER

My Cat can't read, can't read a word
(To think he could would be absurd)

Yet every time I read a book,
he scrambles up to take a look
He stops & flops on Chapter One.
I'll never get my homework done!

I tip my book; he thinks it's play
He won't get up & go away.

So in the end, I let him Win
I close my book & scratch his chin.

I think I see a little smirk
He knew I didn't want to work.

My Cat can't read, although I find...
He does know how to read my mind!!

CAT'S CHARACTER

I wonder, every passing day,

Cats are all around me
In my bed and on my chair
Some are sitting on my knee
Some are pulling at my hair.

They are walking 'round my feet

WHEN I'M AN OLD CAT

When I am an Old Cat I shall wear a diamond collar and leave my footprints on white couches;
I shall drink my cream with a touch of brandy and spit out my vitamins;
I shall sit on the laps of dog people just to irritate them;
I shall nap on top of the neighbor's petunias and perch on top of birdbaths and grow charmingly chubby

But for now I must tolerate the dog
and use my litterbox and not sharpen my claws on the sofa,
so no one can doubt the truth that cats are superior todogs.
But every once in a while I wonder if I should be naughty now and then and nip a few toes,
so my humans won't be too shocked when suddenlyI become an old cat and start to wear a diamond collar.
